The Roy Orbison Story

The Caruso Of Rock

Roy Orbison was born April 23rd 1936 and grew up in Wink, West Texas. At aged five he was given his first guitar and by age eight, was regularly appearing on local radio. He had his first minor hit, Ooby Dooby, in 1956 but achieved world wide acclaim in 1961 with Only The Lonely. Thereafter, hit followed hit and in 1964 he was voted World's Best Vocalist by New Musical Express readers. By this time, his image was set.., Black hair, Rayban Wayfarers and, generally, black attire.

In 1966 he suffered the tragic loss of his Wife, Claudette in a motorcycle accident then, two years later, a house fire robbed him of two of three Sons. If tragedy curtailed the run of hits, it did not break Roy as well it might. He continued to tour and release music until, in 1980 he won his first Grammy Award for a duet with Emylou Harris, 'That Loving You Feeling Again'.

In 1986, David Lynch released the film Blue Velvet which included Roy's 'In Dreams' earning many accolades from new fans. There followed a wonderful duet with K.D. Lang of his big hit 'Crying' and in 1987 together with an immense backing band that included Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello in its numbers, he recorde a live show, 'Roy Orbison And Friends, A Black And White Night.' 1988 saw the collaberation with George Harrison, Bob Dylan. Jeff Lynn and Tom Petty forming The Travelling Wilburys Super Group to world wide acclaim. Roy also released the single 'You Got It'. Sadly, Roy passed away on December 6th of that year, not living to see the huge success he had, once again, become. His phenomenal vocal range earned him the title The Caruso of Rock; Elvis called him "the greatest singer in the world".

Now, you can relive all the hits from 1956 through 1992 (with the release of 'I Drove All Night') with one of Roy's biggest fans, 'ORBISONGS'.
